The XCOM games remain some of the best tactical RPGs on PC, and while we still haven’t had official word on an XCOM 3 yet, we did get a fantastic Firaxis strategy game two years ago that you might have missed out on. Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a favorite among many at PCGamesN towers, and is well worth trying whether or not you’re a big superhero enjoyer. It never reached the audience peaks that XCOM 2 did, but if you’re craving some rewarding tactics in the wake of Baldur’s Gate 3 then you can grab Midnight Suns right now in a sale at its lowest price yet on Steam.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a delight, yet despite the developer pedigree it hasn’t had the attention it deserves as one of the best tactical RPGs in recent years. Perhaps that’s because people didn’t realize its origins, or were unsure about the card system that determines the actions you can take during combat. In fact, Firaxis was smart enough to not lean too hard on its priors, and adapts what it does best to fit the superhero format; Sam’s glowing Midnight Suns review praises it for the puzzle-like challenges each encounter provides.

Maybe society’s overall Marvel burnout hit it at a bad time. If that’s the case, now’s a good time to jump back in, as Midnight Suns characters don’t play off the over-familiar MCU designs. Featuring a full character creator for your protagonist, it also boasts a rather distinctive cast selection. Along with the usual suspects, there’s space for the likes of Blade and Ghost Rider, and as someone whose Marvel knowledge isn’t quite as deep I appreciated the opportunity to learn about lesser-featured names such as Magik and Nico Minoru. Pick up the DLC and you can even play as (a different take on) Dr Michael Morbius himself.

Whatever the reason you skipped out on it originally, the ongoing Steam sale is a good chance to reconsider. If you already love the XCOM series, you’ll probably enjoy the strategic depth that this Marvel adaptation brings to the table. If you enjoy a good superhero tale, its battles characterize each person’s unique skill set well, and they’re complemented nicely by the quieter moments in between fights where you hang out at base and develop your Midnight Suns friendships with each member of your crew.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is 85% off on Steam until Thursday November 21, meaning you can expect to pay just $8.99 / £7.49 for your copy, down from its usual price of $59.99 / £49.99. All of its additional DLC is also on at least a 60% discount. Head here to grab a copy for yourself and find out what you’ve been missing.

If you decide to take the plunge, there are lots of Marvel’s Midnight Suns mods to enhance your experience even further. Alternatively, soar into another of the best superhero games for lots more chances to save the world.
