The Crew fans have been a little irritated with Ubisoft over the course of 2024, all stemming from the publisher shutting down the first game’s servers because of “server infrastructure and licensing constraints.” With The Crew being an online only title, that meant the game was made unplayable, and Ubisoft made matters worse by seemingly revoking the game from people who had bought it.
It was claimed that one of the reasons Ubisoft did this was to try and stop fans from making the game playable again, something which a dedicated group of modders have been working on since it was shut down. Ubisoft received a substantial amount of backlash at the time, but remained relatively silent on the whole matter while the heat died down.
However, a little over six months after shutting down the servers for The Crew, the publisher has now explained via a new post on the Ubisoft UK Twitter account that it has “heard your concerns about access to The Crew games.” To try and placate fans of the series, Ubisoft has announced that it’s currently working on offline modes for The Crew 2 and Motorfest “to ensure long term access to both titles.”
Not many details are shared about these offline modes at the moment, as Ubisoft asks fans to “stay tuned” for more information in the coming months, but at least it’s nice to know that both The Crew 2 and Motorfest won’t be made completely unplayable like the first game has if Ubisoft decides to shut the servers down in the future.
Unfortunately, the offline modes being worked on don’t seem to extend to the original game, which still remains unplayable in an official capacity. Modders are still working on making The Crew playable on PC, having most recently made the game’s entire map explorable again, but as long as Ubisoft keeps the game unplayable for the majority of fans, then that ire will likely always remain. It’s a step in the right direction though.
