A major leak suggests that a multiplayer Pokemon game is in the works. Recently, The Pokemon Company has faced a series of leaks, including unverified details about Generation 10. However, this new “Teraleak” focuses on Game Freak, one of The Pokemon Company’s key development teams, and is already being called the largest Pokemon leak to date.
Game Freak has developed most of the main Pokemon titles, including Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet. The Japanese company is also leading development for the upcoming Pokemon Legends game, Z–A. Game Freak isn’t the only developer affected by the recent leak. ILCA, another well-known Japanese studio, has also been implicated. Gamers may recognize ILCA from projects like Pokemon Home and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The two companies are connected in this leak through files that suggest they are collaborating on an exciting new Pokemon game.
On October 12, around 7 PM (PT), news about a new Pokemon game appeared online. Initially, the project was rumored to be codenamed Synapse and speculated to be an MMO. However, a few hours later, the primary news aggregator of the leaks, Centro LEAKS on Twitter, clarified that the surfaced screenshots were inaccurate and that the game won’t be an MMO. What has been confirmed, though, is that the gameplay is expected to resemble Splatoon, though the specific similarities remain unclear. The shocking story broke just days after hackers teased the starter Pokemon for Pokemon Legends: Z–A, sparking renewed discussions within the Pokemon community.
The leaks also contain details about the upcoming Pokemon generation, Gen 10, which is now believed to be named “Gaia.” According to the leakers, Gen 10 is being developed for both the Switch 1 and Switch 2. With the sheer volume of leaked data, leakers are still sorting through and analyzing the files. However, numerous beta and discarded Pokemon designs have already been shared online, along with official map editors, theme songs, and even game proposals from earlier years of the Pokemon series. However, Game Freak has yet to respond to any of this.
On October 10, just days before the new Pokemon game leaks, Game Freak issued a notice and apology on its official website, addressing the employees affected by the hack. The company stated that the “unauthorized access” occurred in August 2024 and led to the personal information of over 2,000 employees, including phone numbers and email addresses, being exposed. Game Freak confirmed that it has reached out to the impacted individuals. However, the press release did not mention or address any of the leaked game titles, data, or files. Recently, Game Freak has been increasing its hiring efforts, and it remains uncertain whether this security breach will impact the company’s development plans or its relationship with The Pokemon Company.
