Carve out your pumpkins and put out the scarecrows because Fortnitemares 2023 has officially begun! Epic Games has revealed the return of the Halloween-themed event for the battle royale. The annual event brings a whole host of spooky elements to the game, including new skins, items, and special quests that give rewards. This time around, you’ll play as a vampire hunter.
Fortnite gets consistent updates from Epic Games, thanks partly to its live service content delivery style. The model ensures that you’ll always get new holiday-inspired content annually. Each version of Fortnitemares we’ve had so far always came with a few spooky surprises, and this year’s edition seems to have no shortage of that.
Epic Games released a short trailer to celebrate the launch of Fortnitemares 2023, alongside a detailed post on Fortnite’s official website about the event. Last year, we saw Rick and Morty being added to the game, and for 2023, we’ll also be having some big-name characters from other franchises. Confirmed skins include Alan Wake, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Michael Myers.
Other new and returning outfits from Fortnite’s line of cosmetics are also making an entrance. You can get the Phantom Meowscles, wrapped rapscallion Seth, Festival Phaedra, and Muckfish Bogstick skins on the Item Shop.
In addition to skins, Fortnite is also bringing back some iconic Halloween weapons—like the Pumpkin Launcher, Sanguine Sweets (Jelly Beans, Candy Corn, Hop Drops, Pepper Mints), and the Witch Broom, for example.
If you thought being a vampire hunter wasn’t too Halloween-ey enough, perhaps the Pumpkin Launcher might change your mind. Unvaulted for this year’s Fortnitemares event, you can use this weapon to launch explosive jack-o’-lanterns that will surely scare opponents. Pumpkin Launchers can be found on regular and Rare Chests, flying drones, on the ground, and through Holo-Chests.
Sanguine Sweets ensure that you have a sweet time in battle. They offer distinct benefits to players; for example, Hop Drops will give you a temporary low gravity effect. You can find these items by ringing doorbells, taking down bosses, looking in Candy Buckets, or defeating guards.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a Witch Broom! You can launch yourself in the air by activating this item and glide down to the surface. This ability especially comes in handy when you’re in skirmishes you’re unprepared to commit to. Witch Brooms can be found on the ground and opening Chests.
Alongside the unvaulted items, Epic Games has provided us with new toys to play with—namely, the Wood Stake Shotgun and Thorne’s Vampiric Blade.
While the event continues, you and other vampire hunters must defeat Kado Thorne. To do so, you must use the Wood Stake Shotgun, which can pierce through his heart and disintegrate him from the inside out. The weapon is relatively easy to find, as you can obtain it from the ground through Rare, regular Chests and Holo-Chests. Kado Thorne is located at the Eclipse Estate.
If you manage to defeat Kado Thorne, well, first of all, congrats! But second, he’ll drop a Mythic blade known as Thorne’s Vampiric Blade. Truly a fitting weapon for a vampire, this weapon gives you health at the expense of others. Some of your HP will slowly be restored whenever you damage an enemy using Thorne’s Vampiric Blade.
I know you’re having fun using the Pumpkin Launcher and whatnot, but don’t forget to complete the Fortnitemares Quests to get in-game rewards. You can earn XP by doing the quests, and if you manage to complete a certain amount, you get a bunch of new locker items.

- 15 Fortnitemares Quests – Hypno-Bat Spray, Sweet! Emote and Phantasmic Fall Contrail

Horde Rush—a limited-time mode—makes a return to Fortnite! You must go to different locations as a team and survive each of the Cube Monster’s hordes. The goal is simple: survive until you defeat the final boss. Rack up your score as you take down monsters, do combos, and collect score multipliers.
